Rooms is a generative & interactive work for chamber ensemble (flute, alto saxophone, trumpet, violin, viola, vibraphone, keyboard & electric bass) plus eight-channel surround-sound electronics. The music is organized into 9 brief loops for the ensemble, each representing a unique “room.” At randomly determined intervals the computer announces the randomly selected loop to be played. After the initial room has been announced at the start of the piece, the subsequent announcements interrupt each room’s music unpredictably and direct the ensemble to play a new “room-loop.” Accompanying the music of each room is a rhythmic recitation of the names of eight randomly arranged pieces of furniture emanating from as many speakers surrounding the audience. For each room the computer choses a new random furniture arrangement from a list of 140 pieces of furniture. Optionally a paragraph from the "Rooms" section of Gertrude Stein’s Tender Buttons can be intermittently recited by a processed female voice between room changes.
